Holbrook Fire responded to the fire at 69 Belcher Street around 1:10 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 13, State Fire Marshal Jake Ostroskey reports. The fire originally started out at two alarms but grew to four.

Firefighters rescued a man and a woman, both older adults, from the building, according to Ostroskey. Both were taken to local hospitals where the man, later identified as 91-year-old Dante Monaco, died from his injuries.

“On behalf of the Holbrook Fire Department, I want to offer our deepest condolences to the victim’s family and loved ones,” said Holbrook Fire Chief McFadden. “This is a tragedy for them and the community, and our hearts are with them right now.”

Several GoFundMe campaigns has bee set up to support families who lost everything in the fire. People interested in donating can do so by clicking here or here.

Initial investigation suggests the fire started in the basement or on the first floor of the three-story home, Ostroskey said. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
